Introduction:
Just like Khaled Hosseini's first book,
The Kite Runner, his second book 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' is based in Kabul. The story is a heart-wrenching tale and journey of two women named Laila and Mariam who are betrayed by fate but united by circumstances. Their journey is the one to be felt and experienced for it will drown you in emotions and touch your heart.
Plot Summary:
Mariam, a little girl born to a rich man and a poor maid, stays with her mother on the outskirts of the cities after being abandoned by her father. However, her father makes it a point to visit her every week and pamper her with gifts. But her mother doesn't like Mariam getting close with her father since they have been abandoned by him. Once Mariam runs away from her house to meet her father who doesn't meet her and she returns home disheartened only to see her mother dead. That's when Mariam's life changes forever.
After being married off to a shoemaker in Kabul named Rasheed, Mariam's life takes multiple turns. She is unable to bless Rasheed with a baby that makes him furious and violent.
Meanwhile, the second protagonist, Laila, is born to a neighbour of Mariam and Rasheed in Kabul. She has a happy and normal life that is taken away from her by fate. The poor girl later gets married to Rasheed and what unfolds is an unbelievably awesome tale of emotions and relationships. While Mariam and Laila are at first jealous of each other, circumstances bind them together in an inseparable relationship.
Read the book to know their fight against a horribly violent husband and to quite literally experience the violence in Kabul and the miserable condition of women there.
Writing Style:
The writing style maintained by the author is simple and touchy. The book is so well-written that it will surely soak you in multiple emotions. Just like his first book, Khaled Hosseini has used many local words of Kabul in the book but he also explains their meaning so that the reader doesn't get confused. All in all, the writing is impeccable and the one that you'll absolutely love.
My Perception:
Words won't be enough to explain what this book will give you. It is a journey that you will live through the characters of Mariam and Laila, feel their pain, laugh, cry and rejoice, worry, get angry and what not. 'A Thousand Splendid Suns', just like it's name, is splendid and class apart. You simply wouldn't want the book to end.
